Director: Steven Grahl

Steven Grahl is a sought-after conductor and keyboard player. He was appointed Director of Music at Trinity College, Cambridge in January 2024, where he directs the world-famous choir. He also continues as Conductor of Schola Cantorum of Oxford. 

From 2018-2024, he was Organist (Director of Music) and Tutor in Music at Christ Church, Oxford, and an Associate Professor of Music at Oxford University. Steven served as Director of Music at Peterborough Cathedral from 2014 to 2018, where he was responsible for training the Cathedral Choir, and for the re-pitching of the Hill Organ, on which instrument he has recorded a solo CD. Peterborough Cathedral Choir’s recording of Cheryl Frances Hoad’s EvenYouSong, made under Steven’s direction, was released to critical acclaim in December 2017.
 
For seven years, Steven was Assistant Organist at New College, Oxford, and he combined this post with that of Organist and Director of Music at St Marylebone Parish Church, London. He has also been musical director of The Guildford Chamber Choir, Peterborough Choral Society, and The Stamford Chamber Orchestra. Conducting engagements include: Bach Mass in B minor with Schola Cantorum and Instruments of Time and Truth; Verdi Requiem with Peterborough Choral Society and Cathedral Choirs; Bach Magnificat and Handel Coronation Anthems with the Guildford Chamber Choir and Instruments of Time and Truth; and works by Escaich, Copland, Maw, and Whitacre with Cambridge University Symphony Chorus. Steven has worked with numerous other ensembles, including The Britten Sinfonia, The English Cornett & Sackbut Ensemble, Guildford Philharmonic, New London Chamber Choir, Prime Brass, and Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra.
 
A prize-winning graduate of Magdalen College, Oxford, and the Royal Academy of Music, Steven gained the top prizes in the FRCO examination, and is also a holder of the Worshipful Company of Musicians’ Silver Medallion. In 2010, he was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM), an award offered to past students of the Academy who have distinguished themselves in the music profession and made a significant contribution to it in their particular field. He has been Chairman of the Association of Assistant Cathedral Organists, completed a two-year term as President of the Incorporated Association of Organists, and has held a Fellowship in Choral Direction at Birmingham Conservatoire. Steven was an interpretation finalist in the International Organ Competitions at St Albans (UK) in 2011, and in Dudelange (Luxembourg) in 2013.

  • Founded in 1863, St. Edward's School, known as 'Teddies’, is a co-educational independent school located in the city of Oxford. The school has a proud tradition of excellence in academics, music, and the arts. Located two miles north of Oxford city centre on Woodstock Road, OX2 7NN, the campus is easily accessible by bus, car and train.

  • You must be between the ages of 15 and 22 to apply for this course. If you are 15, you must currently be in Year 11. If you are in year 10, please take a look at our Choral Course in York or at the Junior Choral Courses.

  • The cost of this course is £1125. There are a number of payment options available:

    • £250 deposit followed by an invoice to pay the remaining balance via a bank transfer by 31st March 2025

    • £250 deposit followed by two invoices - one to pay 50% of the remaining balance by 31st March 2025 and the other to pay the remainder by 27th June 2025.

    • The full £1125 on application using a credit card (plus a 1.5% Stripe transaction fee)

    • A monthly payment plan to be completed 6 weeks before the start of the course (27th June 2025) following a deposit of £250 on application. (monthly payments will be subject to a 1.5% Stripe processing fee)

    • Through one of the Foundation’s means-tested bursaries. See more below.

    The refund policy is the same whichever payment option you choose. A full refund is available if you cancel the place by 5pm on 27th June 2025. 50% refund is available if cancelled after 5pm on 27th June and before 5pm on 18th July 2025. No refund is available if you cancel after 5pm on 18th July 2025. (Stripe processing fees are not refundable.)

  • Our bursaries are awarded based on financial need, and the amount awarded is calculated on a sliding scale, which is means-tested. You can read about the criteria here as well deadlines and what information we need. You can apply for a bursary as part of registering for the course.

Helen Charlston was recently a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist (2021-23). In 2023 she won a Gramophone Award for Best Concept Album, and collected the Vocal award at the BBC Music Magazine Awards, both for her second Delphian album: Battle Cry.

This season, Helen makes her debut at the Gran Teatre del Liceu as Sesto in Calixto Bieito’s production of Giulio Cesare conducted by William Christie, and sings Handel’s Messiah at BBC Proms with The Academy of St Martin in the Fields, Bach’s St John Passion with the Academy of Ancient Music, Bach’s Christmas Oratorio with WDR Köln under Simon Halsey, and also with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra under Václav Luks, and Bach’s Magnificat with RIAS Kammerchor under Justin Doyle in South Korea. In recital she performs Battle Cry with Toby Carr at Brucknerhaus Linz, with Sholto Kynoch at the Oxford International Song Festival, a programme of Handel with the Prague Philharmonia at Lobkowicz Palace, and she returns to Wigmore Hall.

Other opera appearances have included her debut at Versailles Royal Opera singing Dido in Purcell Dido & Aeneas, at Grange Festival singing Sorceress/Spirit in the same opera and most recently she covered the title role in Charpentier Médée at Opéra national de Paris.

ARRIVAL TIMES
The arrival time on day 1 is different from that of any previous Choral Course. Singers must now arrive between 11:00am and 11:30am on the first day. The course will conclude on the final day between 5:00pm and 6:00pm.

REFERENCES
As part of your application, we kindly ask for a brief reference from a singing or music teacher. This reference does not affect your acceptance onto the course. Instead, it helps our directors and singing teachers better understand your musical journey so far. Please note, references are only accepted through our online portal. The link to the online portal will be emailed to you once you have registered.

INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS
We welcome applications from singers outside of the UK. However, please note that course fees will include an approximate 3.25% card processing fee.
