Tips for Young Singers | Rebecca Nichols

Say yes to as many projects as you can! So many of the Rodolfus Choir concerts I’ve done have introduced me to repertoire that has since become my favourite music
— Rebecca Nichols, Rodolfus Choir Member

When did you first become involved with the Rodolfus Choir?

I joined The Rodolfus Choir in autumn 2016, after attending a Choral Course at Eton that summer. Lots of singers from my course joined that year, so it was nice to see them again at Rods rehearsals!

What do you remember about your first concert singing with the choir?

The first concert I remember with the choir was the Verdi Requiem with Ed Gardner at the Royal Festival Hall back in November 2016. I had never sung in a concert venue of that size, and working with the Philharmonia Orchestra was a real pleasure.

Can you pick one highlight of being a member of the choir?

Definitely the people. You meet so many new people each time you sing with Rods and it brings together some of the best young singers from around the UK, so it builds a great community. It's amazing how the connections you make singing with Rodolfus can lead to so many other projects. I've always especially loved the concert series around New Year, so I'm greatly missing that this year!

What are you up to now?

I'm currently in my final year of studying Modern and Medieval Languages at Cambridge, and singing as a Choral Scholar at Queens'. This term we've been live streaming services on YouTube and we managed to pre-record a Christmas Carol Service before the November lockdown! It's all available to view over on our Instagram account.

If you had to pick only one song to sing for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

Vaughan Williams ‘Serenade to Music’. The scoring for both orchestra and semi-chorus are just incredible! I first played in it back in 2015 and I've loved it ever since.

Who are your top three composers, musicians or bands from the past and present?

Thomas Tallis, Francis Poulenc, and Herbert Howells are definite favourites.

Can anyone else in your family sing?

My parents actually met in a choir! They both sang at Keble College, Oxford. My brother was a Choral Scholar at Queen's Oxford so there's some healthy rivalry there too.

Where would you like to be in 10 years time?

Ideally, working in film and media and still singing! I'd love to keep making music for as long as possible, hopefully as a lay clerk at a chapel or cathedral.

Have you any advice to give to our junior singers?

Say yes to as many projects as you can! So many of the Rodolfus Choir concerts I've done have introduced me to repertoire that has since become my favourite music, and I've met some of my closest friends through the concerts and tours.

We have three office dogs at The Rodolfus Foundation. What's your favourite animal and why?

I do love dogs, but we got a cat a few months ago and I'm completely obsessed with him, so I'm definitely biased.
